1 Philippians 1:19-26 NET
19-26 for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ. My confident hope is that I will in no way be ashamed but that with complete boldness, even now as always, Christ will be exalted in my body, whether I live or die. For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. Now if I am to go on living in the body, this will mean productive work for me, yet I don’t know which I prefer: I feel torn between the two, because I have a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far, but it is more vital for your sake that I remain in the body. And since I am sure of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for the sake of your progress and joy in the faith, so that what you can be proud of may increase because of me in Christ Jesus, when I come back to you.
Ivan was everywhere. That was the thing that had always amazed me. For years he had denied his wife’s pleas to go to church and while she raised his children in the faith and the household clamored for him to commit his life to Jesus he held out. Only as she was dying in her bed, as he sat in the hallway outside the room not even sharing the space with her and the pastor, did he listen in from outside the door to her requests to the pastor that he not give up on her husband and in that moment committed the rest of his life to Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
She knew that she was torn between the same two choices as Paul, to stay or two pass on to Jesus’ embrace. In that moment, she knew her choice would be different than Paul’s shared in the passage above. From that moment, Ivan lived his life with vigor. He would do whatever he could to bless God and serve the church. When he finally passed, it took five men to replace all the responsibilities he had been carrying weekly behind the scenes.
Reflection/discussion: Heaven will be a true blessing, but what actions are you taking for the sake of others today? As seasons change in life, how have your faithful actions changed?
Prayer: Lord, I want a right relationship with you. Help me to serve you well and obediently. Amen
